About this Temple

Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world by land area. Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple toward the end of the 12th century.

The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the best-preserved temple at the site.

On a Timeless Mission
Our Story

Born from a Pilgrimage, Built for the World

What started as a personal quest to catalog the sacred sites of India grew into a global movement — uniting pilgrims, historians, photographers, and the spiritually curious under one roof.

In 2019, our founders embarked on a pilgrimage through South India and found themselves frustrated — guidebooks were incomplete, online information was scattered, and the rich histories of centuries-old temples were buried under layers of tourism noise.

They began documenting systematically: photographing architectural details, recording oral histories from priests and local custodians, mapping GPS coordinates, and writing cultural contexts that no tourist brochure had ever captured.

By 2020, they had documented over 600 temples across India. By 2021, contributors from Japan, Cambodia, Peru, and Greece had joined. Today, Temples Around the World is the most comprehensive open directory of sacred sites on Earth — built entirely by the community, for the community.

We are not funded by advertising. We are not influenced by tourism boards. We are a pure documentation project, driven by reverence for the sacred and respect for every tradition that has ever pointed humanity toward the divine.

🕌
Every Faith, Every Tradition
We document Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian, Shinto, Taoist, and indigenous sacred sites — with the same depth and respect for each.
📜
Depth Over Breadth
Every listing is verified. We include founding dates, architectural styles, historical milestones, visitor information, and the living stories these sites still hold today.
🌏
Community-Verified
Our global network of contributors — locals, scholars, pilgrims, and photographers — ensures every listing is accurate, respectful, and alive with authentic detail.
♾️
Free. Forever.
Access to Temples Around the World is, and will always be, free. This is a gift to humanity — our contribution to the preservation of sacred heritage.
Mission & Vision

Guided by Purpose, Driven by Reverence

Two distinct commitments shape everything we do — the mission we act on each day, and the vision that keeps us reaching further.

Our Mission
🔱
To Document Every Sacred Site on Earth

Our mission is to build the world's most comprehensive, accurate, and accessible open directory of temples and sacred sites — spanning every religion, every country, and every era of human history.

We achieve this by empowering a global community of contributors, maintaining rigorous verification standards, and keeping every listing freely available without registration, paywalls, or commercial bias.

"Every temple is a doorway into human history. We exist to make sure no doorway is forgotten."
Our Vision
🌟
A World Where Sacred Heritage Is Never Lost

We envision a future where every sacred site — no matter how remote, how small, or how ancient — is digitally preserved and accessible to anyone on Earth. Where a child in Mumbai can explore the temples of Angkor. Where a scholar in Chicago can study shrines in rural Rajasthan.

We believe that preserving sacred heritage is an act of peace — a reminder that humanity, across all its differences, has always sought the transcendent.

"We are building the world's memory of the sacred — one verified listing at a time."
What We Are NOT
Clarity matters. Here is what Temples Around the World will never be — regardless of how large we grow.
A commercial tourism platformWe do not accept paid listings, sponsored placements, or advertising of any kind.
Affiliated with any religionWe document all faiths with equal depth, respect, and editorial independence.
A government or political entityWe operate independently and are not funded by, or beholden to, any government body.
A data brokerWe do not sell, trade, or monetise user data. Your information is yours alone.
Core Values

The Principles That Guide Us

Six values underpin every decision we make — from how we verify a listing to how we handle your personal data.

🙏
Reverence
Every sacred site deserves documentation that honours its spiritual significance. We approach our work with humility, always conscious that these are living places of worship — not museum exhibits.
⚖️
Accuracy
Community-submitted content is reviewed before publishing. We cross-reference historical sources, consult local scholars, and welcome corrections. Truth over speed, always.
🌍
Inclusivity
No faith is elevated above another. No region is deprioritised. Whether it is a 5,000-year-old rock-cut temple or a 50-year-old community shrine, each listing receives the same care and depth.
🔓
Openness
Information about the world's sacred heritage belongs to the world. Our content is freely accessible, our editorial standards are publicly documented, and our decision-making is transparent.
🛡️
Privacy
We collect only what is necessary. We never sell user data. We are compliant with GDPR, CCPA, and the Indian DPDPA 2023. Your trust is the foundation of this community.
🌱
Stewardship
We are custodians of cultural memory. We take this responsibility seriously — building robust archives, respecting intellectual property, and contributing to the digital preservation of endangered heritage sites.
